As your child develops and grows you will most likely come across another vocabulary word: Comorbidity. It simply means the simultaneous appearance of two or more psychiatric or physical illnesses.
It is not unusual for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder to receive a secondary diagnosis such as depression or anxiety. Parents learn to watch their child's behavior and take the appropriate steps to get them treatment (therapy, medication, or both) for such a condition should it present itself.

Sensory integration issues also present challenges for our children. Occupational therapy helps many of our children deal with sensory issues that affect their day.
These issues often impact academic performance. Two examples are a child who can't stand the feeling of paper when the turn the pages in a book ,and another who is driven to distraction by mobiles hanging from the ceiling in classrooms.
The "How Does Your Engine Run?" program might be used by therapists at school to teach children changes to their day to help them self-regulate to keep their engine running "just right".
At home many of us see that our children seek deep compression and tunnel in between the matrress and box spring on a bed. Massage, body socks and weighted blankets often help at bed time, weighted vests help many children remain calm during the day.
We also see they feel calm when they chew or bite on things. Be aware of dental health as you consider gummy bears, Tootsie Rolls, bubble gum or other chewy treats.
A word of advise to parents. It's easy to go online ad buy OT equipment to help your child. As the years go by, lots of us have stockpiles of equipment that either worked for a little while, never worked for our kids, or they simply outgrew. Do some checking before you spend a lot.
