Autism is a spectrum including varying degrees of related conditions and symptoms. Some of the most common components are social deficits, narrow interests and sensory issues.
Some use the terms Asperger's Syndrome and high-functioning autism interchangably.
Some say Asperger's is simply Autism with language function.
Some share a belief that Asperger's is a right brain illness and Autism is a left brain illness.
As you read and learn more you come to the realization that all of the theories won't help you get out the door any faster in the morning. We all want the research to continue, but we are busy dealing with the practical matters.
We hope that you find help in real life advice and tips from parents who've been through it. Let us help you.
Famlies of non-verbal children often wish their children could make their feelings and needs known. They quickly discover that behavior is comunication. These parents quickly become experts at the art of observation as they solve the mystery of the moment to determine what their child needs.
Similarly, Asperger children experience melltdowns. While often have great vocabularies, they are unable to verbalize the problem.
The following scenario could impact either child:
The child comes home screaming at the end of the school day. This continues for four days straight. The child and parents are exhausted. The teacher is unable to to determine the cause. An OT visits the classroom and sits at the child's desk. She quickly determines that the fluorescent light fixture overhead is flickering at odd intervals, which is a sensory irritation for the child. The fixture is repaired and the meltdowns stop.
"Mom, am I a mistake of nature?"
